Ukraine-Russia War Take 2

Ukraine-Russia War Take 2

Here is what the preliminary take on the Ukraine thread disappearing is:

The site was hit with a massive spam attack where hundreds of spam threads were created. In the case where, for example, I see a single spam thread and delete it, that is called a soft delete, and mods can still see them but forum members cannot. Those deletion can be undone.

When a massive attack hits with hundreds of threads, an admin uses a different procedure where the hundreds of spam threads are merged and then hard deleted, where the threads are gone, and no note is left behind. As I have mentioned with my own experience of just soft deleting a large number of posts, sometimes a post or thread gets checked or merged accidentally and is deleted by mistake. Dealing with hundreds of spam threads takes a sledgehammer, not a scalpel.

It appears that our Ukraine thread may have gotten caught up in that recent net of spam threads. If so, it is likely gone for good. I cant say this for sure, and am awaiting comments from admins on this issue. Yes, this sucks. And hopefully there was some other software glitch that caused the disappearance, and we may recover it in the future.

But in the meantime, I have created this new Ukraine-Russia War thread to enable the conversation to continue. Obviously continuity with earlier discussions will be lost. There is no way around that. So as best as possible, let's pick up the conversation with recent events and go from there.

If you have any questions about this, please post them in the mod thread, not here. Let's keep this thread going with posts about the war, not the disappearance of the old thread.

Thanks.

They're anti-gun though.

I have to admit, begrudgingly, that this made me lol. I, and you, are bad people.

Actually reminds me of the old Pookie, I mean Chris Rock, tune.

"Never go to night clubs with metal detectors. Sure, it feels safe inside, but when you come out, everyone know you ain't got one".

And yeah, no sex in the champagne room. There's champagne in the champagne room. But you don't want champagne, you want sex. And there is. No. Sex. In. The. Champagne. Room.

We all got front row seats brah.

Oh dude gtfo with that bs 😆
.When you mentioned Afghanistan and Eyeraq you were trying to give the impression you were like Arnold in Commando, massacring bad guys left right and centre and doing cool Magyver $hit making IED's outa sugar, twine and a magnifying glass. Then you get your bluff called and you're all like "hey what's the difference I still served even if it was guarding a warehouse full of paper clips in Boise Idaho, I put my l

No I’ve never said anything like that. Your post reads as half sarcasm though. Anyway I don’t have to have done all of those crazy things just to have done more things than the poster talking ****. It’s not my fault he chose that category to attack me on. You wouldn’t know, but there is a big difference enlisting during wartime and during peace time. That’s the distinction I made. I wasn’t with a high speed unit like the 101st or the 82nd. I spent a year outside of the country and I don’t care what you think of it lol you’re prob a civilian, your opinion on these things is not relevant nor respected.

I can tell you a couple of cool stories from guys I served with. None of them involved me and it makes no difference to me what your friends or your cousins did or all that. If you didn’t serve then the idea that I am more of a coward than you are is very hard to prove. Of course you could be, but the reality is that the people who call military veterans cowards are usually projecting. (Like trump)

Yeah I guess you could say you're the victim here.

YOU BIG FAT SHAMMING FRAUD!!!!😡

PW, have you ever heard of "stolen valor"?

I was in the army. Of course I’ve heard of stolen valor. Has nothing to do with me and isn’t illegal. Whenever idiots tell me fake war stories I just smile and nod.

The actual ****? You made your own bed here, I just said you were a coward. You chose to use your military service as some sort of evidence that you were not a coward. How is this "me attacking you", exactly?

Bro I said you were more of a coward than I am.

If I said I wasn’t a coward then I take it back , I meant it in relative terms. I thought I made that clear

Go and hang out with Victor man, you two can spin tales to one another about how all the terrible people here have marginalised your amazingly insightful opinions.

nobody has marginalized me

Bet the guy in the mirror nods back, too.

Ok. Drop the dick measuring derail and let's get the thread back at least closer to the topic. It's hard to discuss who is the braver (or was it bigger coward) without veering over into personal attacks.

Thanks

Funnily enough, this is a dispute you are actually qualified to resolve, yet you still take yourself out of the equation. If your mod philosophy is going to be, shall we say, interventionist, at least intervene when appropriate. Right now you're the guy who called the turn OOP with a flush draw and a gutshot and no pot odds, hit his gin card with the offsuit gutshot, and open checked the river.

I did intervene when appropriate, as a mod and hopefully it will adjust the trajectory of the discussions away from the minefields before anyone gets hurt.

Intervene as a poster, not a mod then. Get some buy in from your customers. This hands off "I am elevated above thee" manner is really not doing it.

It's not an "elevated above thee" thing. It's a "Im not going to continue the derail about cowardice and courage" as a poster in the very thread I just told people to stop that derail in as a mod

See my commment in your little mod thread.

two years into the three day special operation, russia's 19th century decision to invade its neighbor over territorial claims has resulted in hundreds of thousands of dead and a hard nosedive in russia's general standard of living.

what a ****up

Russias oil is up double. How is that a nodedive?

crude oil is priced 10% lower than in the leadup to the invasion

crude oil trades on the international market in dollars

the ruble has fallen 20% against the dollar vs the leadup to the invasion, despite an increase in central bank interest rates from 6.5% to 16.0%

russia's miitary spending has trebled, exceeding social spending for the first time since 1945

it costs the russian government just over 13.0% per year to borrow on international markets, vs around 6.0% pre-war

the above are straightforward facts

there are other factors which i judge to be negative, such as russia's new dependency on chinese markets and demand, and the political ramifications of such, but those factors are subjective and arguable in a way that the above is not

by the way it should not be a surprise that fighting a large scale land war over the course of years is very expensive. i mean its ****ing obviously very expensive.

No, its not, crude oil prices have doubled since the invasion.

wtf are you talking about?

How do you know who russia sold to? how do you have these numbers? U dont. plain and simple.

Russias spending has trebled? well so did yours, you donk, while you left your people homeless, dying in the streets. but you had to send your money to a proxy war.

congrats. you just made putin and russia so much richer.

Russia's economy will be seeing a slight boost due to switching to a wartime economy. They will be likely be chasing a solution for crisis after crisis though due to that.

Medium term and long term they will be an absolute mess.

Crude oil is not up 2x from beginning of invasion. It's down significantly since the first few months of the invasion. That isn't a reflection of Russia's economy anyways though.
