The Box of Chocolates Thread (You never know what you're going to get!)

Welcome to the General Discussion thread. If you have a topic that doesn't warrant its own thread, post it here. Have a free form discussion going that no longer fits in the original thread? It may be moved here to give it a place to wander. Also, general chit chat is welcome!

I did report it. and I messaged multiple mods. and it was the third time he had made such an accusation. and then we had a pm exchange where I had to beg you to delete it.

the funny thing is that you actually banned him for it and left the post up. I didnt even realize that you banned him for that post and thought he was banned for something else.

I dont report posts now, bc transparency is important.

I went back and looked at our pms about that post and needless to say, what I read bears no resemblance at all to your description of them. But I will honor the policy of not posting pms in the threads, so I'll leave it at that.

What's this about luckbox' penis?

It took me hours and multiple PMs to get it deleted.

I didn't ask for him banned. I wanted the slander deleted.

Ok. I won't take this much time on this again, but here is the timeline of events: (all times/dates are Thailand time)

11 Jan

644 pm offensive post in question is made

719 pm you report post

921 pm first pm from you asking post be deleted(about 2.5 hours after post report)

950 pm poster banned (about 3 hours after initial post)

955 pm my reply explaining why I left post up; asked you to consider leaving it(34 mins after first pm)

1002 you reply ask for deletion anyway

Exact time unrecorded: Post deleted

12 Jan

915 am. You pm thanking me for deleting post

That may actually be an example of one of the fastest report to action mod responses in history. Your depiction of the number of pms required, having to beg me to delete the post, and the amount of time between request and action being excessive is completely false. If you have an expectation that any post report or pm will be responded to faster than that is unrealistic. The forum is not monitored in real time.

And btw, a mod decision to ban is based on a posters history, among other factors. Poster request for a ban is not one of them.

So 3 PMs (including the report) begging for a defamatory post to be deleted. You even banned the guy and left the post up lol.

OK. We're done with this. Your mischaracterizations of the pms is clear, but Im not going to post them. You are not even posting in good faith now. And Ive never heard anyone who considers a post report "begging".

this is bait

you are trying to get me to post the PMs so you can ban me.

anyway, I considered it begging. you can consider it what you want.

In fairness, in many instances for most of the forum's history, this has been the most important factor. Many mods have just banned posters at the request of other posters they favor, with no diligence beyond this.

Lies. Ban this clown.

I can't speak about moderation actions from before I got here but I certainly havent seen any of this from any of the mods Ive worked with here. I would hope that any mod who did that in the past at least got some form of financial kickback from it. 🙄

Most of the mods wind up snap-booting Kelhus once they realize he's here to spread his usual Nazi bullshit. Obv the current crop of moderators has a different take.

by d2_e4 P

Lies. Ban this clown.

That's actually exactly what happened when Kelhus was banned for talking about zygotes and elephant testosterone.

Victor, I doubt one defamatory post has moved the needle on your well-earned reputation here, even if we had all viewed it.

Did I say I cared what you guys thought of me?

I know, I read the thread in question at the time.

Im certainly no expert on this stuff, and dont want to derail the mod thread much more, so after this post if need be lets continue in the boc thread. But I believe, to use marriage as an example, is that there is no biological, physical manifestation of the concept of marriage. No married dna, no place in the brain you could scan and see that someone is married or not. So from a physical perspective the state of marriage doesnt exist, or isnt "real".

But rather marriage is a social construct, created by societies themselves, and what constitutes a marriage and what constitutes the expectations of married behavior is determined by each society. Age of marriage, who can get married, how many people in one marriage, etc, etc are all agreed upon at the societal level. Yet it has a very real effect on peoples lives. It is a real thing that exists, even though there is no physical indication that it does.

by spaceman Bryce P

Which one of the following possible answers is more accurate:

A. Race is a biological concept and when europeans enslaved African Americans this was done on the basis of biology.
B. European colonists socially constructed ideas that African Americans were inferior to Europeans to justify enslaving millions of people.
C. Racism isn’t real.

The more you study this the more you realize option b is the reality. That is why no one teaches

Copied from mod thread.

It's not entirely true about marriage. Yes we construct the rules but they can't be any old rules. The rules we construct are somewhat constrained by something real about humans

I'm not denying that the idea of gender, and especially gender roles, doesn't have real affects on people's lives, because of course it does. In fact, I think that gender roles are a pretty big part of what makes people feel they are trans. If men and women were treated exactly equally by society in every way, they had exactly the same opportunities and the same (lack of) expectations, I believe far fewer people would feel they have been labelled with the wrong gender. As I have said earlier, I would support the removal of everything related to sex and gender from society - nothing separated by sex or gender, and even the removal of gendered pronouns from the language. I'm sure a few people would still feel their bodies don't fit their brain, but I believe that number would be considerably fewer than it is today. And then there would be no one with the desire to be considered non-binary, as there would be nothing binary about society or language to begin with - basically everyone would be non-binary.
