Moderation Questions and General Chat Thread

Moderation Questions and General Chat Thread

The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic failed, and it became a general discussion thread with almost no moderation related posts at all. And those that were posted were so buried in non-mod posts that it became a huge time drain on the mods to sort through them. Then, when off topic posts were deleted posters complained about that.

This led to the closing of the mod discussion thread, replaced by the post report/pm approach. This has filtered out lots of noise, but has resulted at times in the General Discussion Thread turning into a quasi-mod thread. This is not desirable, but going back to the old mod thread is also not a workable option.

Therefore, I have created this new moderation thread, but with a different purpose and ground rules than previous mod threads. The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for posters to pose questions to the mods about how policies are applied; to bring to the mods attention posts they think are inappropriate and reach the level of requiring mod action; and for mods to communicate to posters things like changes or clarifications to policies, bannings, etc.

Now let me tell you what this thread is NOT a place for. It is not for nonmoderation related posts, even if the discussion originates from a comment in in a mod related post. It is not for posters to post their opinions about other posters or whether a poster should be banned. It is not to rehash past grievances about mod decisions from months or years ago. The focus of this thread will be recent posts that require action now. Or questions about current policies and enforcement.

So basically, this is a thread to ask mods questions. Which means, pretty much that only mods should be answering those questions. If a poster asks why a particular post was deleted or allowed, only a mod can answer that. Everyone else who wants to jump in with their opinion or their mod war story needs to stay out of it. It just increases the noise to signal ratio and does nothing to answer the question.

Everyone needs to understand that this thread has very different rules than the old mod thread and any other thread. Any non-moderation post will be deleted on sight. Not moved to the appropriate thread, just deleted. So don't waste your time crafting a masterpiece post about wars or transgender issues or the presidential election and then post it in this thread. It will be gone. Also, this isnt a thread for general commentary about our mods performance. Posting "browser sucks as a mod" or any such posts that don't actually ask about a policy or request a mod action will be deleted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the moderation of this forum. But this thread isnt for complaining about mods. You are free to go to the ATF forum and make your concerns about modding in this forum there.

So with that intro, this thread is open for those who need to bring questions about mod policies or bring inappropriate posts to the mods attention. Again, it is NOT a thread for group discussions about other posters or for other posters to answer questions directed to mods.

We'll see how this goes. If you have what you feel is an open issue raised in the General Discussion Thread, please copy that post or otherwise reintroduce the issue here.

Thanks.

I think I'm becoming a Francophile. Not sure if there is some sort of pill or something to cure that, but I keep hanging out with French people and I've started studying French daily.

I probably still sort of hate the language because of how ridiculous it is but the utility of knowing it can no longer be ignored-- they're everywhere in Colombia and I encounter them so much more often than I encounter naive English speakers.

And since I don't speak French I'm reduced to having to speak either English or Spanish with them. They aren't all good at Spanish but it's so much easier for them to pick it up. It's rare for me to find a native English speaker whose Spanish is better than mine but it's not at all rare to find French people with excellent Spanish-- which I find annoying. But I've made it my goal to speak French well enough that when I come across them in the future, instead of speaking English or Spanish we'll be speaking French because **** them.

I like their fries. And their kissing.

And their ticklers.

as far as expats go, the french are far and away the most absurdly laid back and chill group of expats

if you see a large dinner gathering where more people are smoking than eating and everyone is fully engrossed in conversation and laughing constantly you found a group of french people

and if you're in luck, you'll meet a french couple and go find a secret island with them and then after truly befriending them you'll steal the guy's girlfriend before it all falls apart when the shark attacks happen and the drug lords boot you off

They definitely enjoy their smoking and I agree about the rest. I come across a fair amount of Germans too and they're the best hikers and outdoorsy types but the French party harder and still like the outdoors themselves.

About to go hiking with a couple of them-- including one girl from New Caledonia who might be the most attractive person I've ever seen

Another guy here from Reunion. France probably did it by just making their overseas territories part of France. No need to overthrow your colonial overlords when you are them.

For me, having to be around people smoking would overpower all the benefits. Too bad.

Besides smokers, I also don't like being around pig farmers that don't clean up after rolling around in pigshit.

Guys only half the French smoke

JFC, yanks are so funny about smoking. Don't come to Europe, boys, you'll choke.

They used to.be the same about swearing on TV, when the word “toilet” wasn’t allowed. Maybe that’s why people talk about going to the bathroom nowadays. Can’t stand that phrase myself.

From schoolage there's the group who smoke or hang about with those who do. And then there's the rest. Everyone wins.

Is it still bad in the UK as well? Is smoking generally allowed in public indoor areas like restaurants, casinos, and music venues?

No, smoking indoors has been illegal for about 20 years here. Isn't it also illegal indoors in most states?

Yes, but I assume it is still legal in most of Europe, based on your comment and on what I have heard elsewhere.

I would like to travel to Europe myself, but might want to avoid countries where there is likely to be smoke everywhere.

I can only speak for the UK I'm afraid. It certainly would not surprise me if it's still mostly legal elsewhere.

A bit of googling will show you that indoor smoking is prohibited in almost all of the EU.

I accept the ban as I shouldn't have lost my temper. But my insults to Jalfrezi were responses to proactive insults from both him and microbet.
Micro said this:

I did proactively insult victor so again fair enough on the ban, but if you're gonna ban me for retorting to the other two, then they should be temp banned as well for proactively insulting me and using the same terminology that was deemed unacceptable by the mods when I retorted.

And to clarify I don't want them banned, but you're not being fair by only banning me. I think a warning for all three of us would have sufficed but again you're not being fair here rococo.

Anyway I only created this account to point this out. and because due to the ban I can't pm you to appeal it. I'll now bow out for the next two days until my corpus account ban is up. But based on the context of this exchange, I respectfully ask that you reconsider my ban as again they proactively insulted me and banning me for my reaction isn't fair, even if banning me for insulting victor is.

If you've been temporarily banned:

1) Chances are you should just suck it up and wait out the ban. You probably did something stupid and deserve it. And it's just a few days, so go out and get some sun or something.

2) Absolutely do not create a new account to go back to posting whatever it was that got you in trouble in the first place, because posting on a temporary account during a temporary ban will lead to an extension of your original account's ban (even to permanency), and the removal of the secondary account.

****************
Check. Check. And check.

His temp ban seems unfair but then you should ban him for immediately creating the second account to fight the temp ban. Lol

I think temp banned accounts should still be allowed to PM mods tbh

lol making a new account to whine about a TWO DAY temp ban is hilarious
