In other news

In the current news climate we see that some figures and events tend to dominate the front-pages heavily. Still, there are important, interesting or just plain weird things happening out there and a group of people can find these better than one.

I thought I would test with a thread for linking general news articles about "other news" and discussion. Perhaps it goes into the abyss that is page 2 and beyond, but it is worth a try.

Some guidelines:
- Try to find the "clean link", so that links to the news site directly and not a social media site. Avoid "amp-links" (google).
- Write some cliff notes on what it is about, especially if it is a video.
- It's not an excuse to make outlandish claims via proxy or link extremist content.
- If it's an editorial or opinion piece, it is polite to mark it as such.
- Note the language if it is not in English.
- There is no demand that such things be posted here, if you think a piece merits its own thread, then make one.

I got an email from someone running for local supervisor of elections. There were a lot of references to the 2020 election not being kosher. Some borderline conspiracy stuff.

It had this in big letters "Who thinks that the manner in which votes are counted is important?" Under it is a picture of Mussolini raising his hand.

^lol... that is awesome.

Apparently Oklahoma is now mandating teachers must teach the bible.

This is where we're going if people don't wake up.

Far right makes big gains in election first round - exit pollspublished at 19:00
19:00Breaking

And we can now bring you the first estimates of the results in the first round of the French parliamentary elections, based on initial exit polls given by France 2.

National Rally: 34%

New Popular Front: 28.1%
French President Macron's centrist Ensemble alliance: 20.3%
Republicans: 10.2%

National Rally has never won the first round of a parliamentary election before. Three weeks ago it topped the vote in the European elections. Now, if confirmed, this result puts the party in pole position for next Sunday's crucial run-off vote.

But this election is about 577 constituencies and each one of them has its own political story. RN may win some of them outright tonight, and it may be ahead in most of the others.

And yet, the left-wing alliance has also done extremely well, and it's made up of four separate parties who've split the constituencies up between them.

So what happens tonight and in the coming days is what counts.

Will other party leaders from the centre and centre right call for voters to back the Socialists, the Greens and the Communists? Because if they do, this race has another seven days to run.

The champagne will be flowing at RN headquarters for now, but this isn't over.

Maybe the left will realize that when u get communist in your friend sphere you might not be in the right place in the political spectrum anymore …
So yeah crazy $h!t like NR coming first happens .

Fear of communism has absolutely zilch to do with the result which as always these days was about immigration and the general uselessness of establishment parties.

I didn’t say they afraid of communism 0o…

It means the left lose his way and goes to far being relegated with the worst of them .
Isn’t the right usually against immigration?
Macron would be considered almost a far left in the U.S. .
His been contested for many thing for a very long time now .
People got fed up .

Macron is not remotely left. He and his ilk of center right politicians in the Blair mould are the ones who have opened the door for the far right by failing to do anything.

Uk under starmer peobably won't be far behind.

Radical change is desperately needed and coming. It will be good change or bad change so we better offer (and then deliver) good change damn quick.

In US he definately is.
before he became president trying to push for a "centrish" view that seem lacking, he was in the socialist party.

yeak and starmer is a self proclaimed socialist

They woud all be perfectly happy in the democratic party.

Good for them. A lot of people need quite a bit more Jesus in their lives.

No mainstream educational institution is going to flip right to Exodus or Deuteronomy and start condemning people to eternal hellfire for some obscure ceremonial offense. Odds are this will be a lot of WWJD, "turn the other cheek", and Matthew 7:1-6 action.

Of course, this doesn't mean some children won't find the craziest **** they can in there and post a million TikToks with zany sound effects and filters while they talk about how it's forbidden to sit in the same chair that a menstruating woman has recently occupied.

Except the religious right doesn't give a **** about jesus. This is just one step towards fascism in the name of religion. Next up - public stonings.

Have you spoken to any live human beings without using a keyboard?

I don't think your mental image of someone on the "religious right" is in line with reality. A vast majority of the bible-thumpers are normal people leading normal lives and just trying to be nice to those around them.

Go sit in on a church service once and just watch the people interact with each other before and after. Putting more of that energy into classrooms will be a net-positive for just about everyone.

I would avoid any Wisconsin-synod Lutheran churches, though. They can come off a little fire and brimstoney if you catch them on the wrong week of a story arc.

I admit I don't know what to make of the megachurches with private jets. I've never been to one, but I assume they're relatively rare. Everything about how they're presented in media goes against the book they're allegedly teaching. It must be like Scientology. They're just making **** up as they go along. Rules for thee, not for me type stuff. Just a cult with a Christianity costume on.

If only we could find a catchy name for that.

I'm not by any means anti-religion. I've always maintained that much more good has come from it than bad.

And, I'll agree that most people that go to church go about their days, leaving everyone else alone.

But there is a faction that is using religion for other, not so good means. I mean, look at who they support? Trump is the opposite of what the religious right purports to be all about. They spout out about the ten commandments and jesus, but they don't really mean it when it comes down to it.

But the bigger issue is forcing their brand of religion down everyone's throats. It isn't much different from radical islam. Only one religion is correct and anyone that doesn't buy into it is bad.

Not to mention separation of church and state.

"Separation of church and state" might be the most frequently misused argument against certain government actions or inactions.

I highly doubt they're going to have teachers preach surrender to Jesus as your Lord and Savior. However, even if they did, they're still in the clear as long as it's strictly optional.

They'll need to hit the mandated volume of instructional minutes without any of the bible stuff. I just took your word for it, but upon further reflection I'd bet it's just a ragebait headline.

Google it. Most of the articles are behind a paywall, though.

Inso0, what would BJ (baby jesus) say about supermarket soda theft? Do you think he approves?

I'm sure members of Isis treat each other with the same affirmation and acceptance. That's what religions tent to do, internally.

If you live in these areas, Christians put enough pressure on non-conformists without the schools doing it.

The bible is a really interesting subject of study, but that doesn't seem to be what evangelicals are about. More like, cherry picking a few quotes to justify being selfish and bigoted and ignoring everything else.

There are churches that do good and some that do both good and bad. I think i have a pretty good idea which brand of Christianity wants to be forced on public school students. It's not the eye of a camel brand.

I went to catholic school and spent a good amount of time perusing the Bible for the worst parts. That's a good part of what turned me into an atheist. I'm certain that anyone who reads the entire Bible is more likely to turn away from Christianity than towards it.
