The costs of trans visibility
Yesterday, Dylan Mulvaney broke her silence: https://www.tiktok.com/@dylanmulvaney/vi....
For context, this is a trans influencer who built a 10 million strong following on TikTok. She took a brand deal with budweiser to post an ad on an instagram, and the anti-trans right went absolutely ballistic, calling for a boycott, condemning the company, and to some perhaps unknowable degree it influenced that Budweiser sales dropped by a 1/4 and
. Dylan speaks more personally about the effect of the hatred on her. What strikes me about this story is that it is just about visibility. This isn't inclusion in sports or gender-affirming care for minors, it was just that a trans person was visible. This wasn't even visibility in a TV commerical that a poor right-winger is forced to see, it was an ad on her own instagram page. We're all in our own social media algorithm influenced bubbles, but from my vantage point it really has seemed that in the last year or so things have just gotten worse for trans people and the backlash to even minor visibility is growing.
We need to do better.

With the big 5 personality model you can take someone's results and predict their politics etc. People think they're rational etc but the stories and narratives they build their world view around begin with their own psychological profile. The more radical your personality is, the more radical your politics are. People live in stories and narratives then gather facts to support it and dismiss those that don't. In my experience (which seems to be supported by research) people closest to the middle are better able to look at evidence and form views accordingly. People on the extremes are very poor at this
you're unknowingly just proving my point - it doesn't require "patience" to moderate where you believe people are politely discussing subjective viewpoints
moreover, the viewpoints he outlaws is not a niche and hateful belief, but rather the mainstream view found around the world
meanwhile he completely ignores all the personal insults and attacks laid out because they are coming from people he considers moral allies
if someone with the opposite of coordi or uke's position exhibited identical behavior they'd have been banned long ago for their behavior - this is unquestionable fact but gansta won't realize this because he's framing it as a battle of good vs evil where coordi and uke aren't being dbags but instead doing their best to save the thread from the bad people
this entire construct is just an extremely effective bully pulpit where many who disagree with his moderation decisions are not going to care enough to say anything to him directly because then they too will be falsely attacked and labeled as a hateful bigot
i'm sorry for using you as a rhetorical device it was not my intention to slander you, only to speak to a mod using framework they would understand
Nonsense
This is their MO though. Even in this thread, less extreme but still happens.
1. Make a wild claim that goes against biology
2. Complain you’re facing hatred because someone explains biology 101 to you
3. Call anyone who doesn’t share your views a bigot, homophobe and transphobe. The “silence anyone that disagrees with you” trifecta.
4. If that doesn’t work you silence them either by making up bullshit forum rules or straight up deleting facebook accounts.
5. Rinse and repeat until there’s no one left to oppose you.
With all that being said. They’re a very tolerant and inclusive bunch. Just remember that.
Add the carrot as well: disregard much bigger ethical, moral, legal violations if they move to your side (that antitrust case might be reduced in scope if you really go allin pro trans/BLM/whatever they are pushing for example). Cover them with public money to "research" your theology and "publish science" furthering the theocratic agenda. Hire them as "consultants" for whatever BS you can find an excuse for. And so on.
Given how one-sided within power structures wokism is (or was, until recently?) it's incredible how much it got opposed; but i suppose that happens when the horror you want to impose on society is too big: maybe we still have enough antibodies against totalitarianism.
Lol at the guy having to google "non-binary". Honestly, this entire schtick from you is getting rather old. We get it, you reject notions of gender. So obviously this is going to have the follow on consequence of you rejecting notions of women that include gender or non-binary, etc. You don't have to play the same game every time. It isn't deep. It isn't clever. It isn't funny.
Gosh the guy who (allegedly) put me on ignore sure talks about me a lot. And isn't calling people douchebags kinda a douchebag move?
I think the problem is that many of you feel that you consider simply disagreeing with the pro-trans narrative is hate speech. Also, your complete refusal to answer direct questions posed of you when you know the answer will contradict statements you’ve made and you have no clear rebuttal does not paint you in a positive light either.
this is disprovably false. This thread is littered with “anti-trans narratives” ganstaman presumably disagrees with, and they are all still here. By any objective measure he is VERY permissive of transphobic content, which I don’t disagree with, but it’s amazing to see these folks thinking he is some draconian overbearing moderator here
it's not at all
could you possibly imagine how terrible conversation would be in the religion forum if anyone who said that they didn't believe god was real was banned and any discussion of non-christian religion was met with a bully pulpit of posters who relentlessly attacked that person as a heretic
it's literally no different here - it's just a new religion
again, not banned because it's objectively wrong as it's clearly subjective
but it's banned because it is argued that someone saying they didn't believe in god only did so in order to attack christians - there's no world where you can be sympathetic and kind to christians and having no problem with them practicing their religion without also believing in it as well
it's just insane
So someone whom you've call a "biological man" should use the ladies' room? Isn't that a bit weird?
So Imane Khalif is a woman, except when she steps into a boxing ring, then she transitions to a man temporarily? This is all a bit odd?
You keep using the term “bully pulpit” incorrectly, fwiw.
It’s a common mistake.
no i'm not, he's leaning hard on his career (not that i doubt it but for all we know he's a 711 clerk) as an authoritative figure who can use that in addition to his powers as a mod to advocate for his agenda
i absolutely used it correctly - again, your bias is showing that you can't see it for what is clearly is
A "bully pulpit of posters" isn't proper usage, bully pulpit is a place from which you talk and address the crowd, not a group of people whipped up into frenzy, which is what you can achieve with access to a bully pulpit but not what the bully pulpit is.
The pulpit is the place you stand in with megaphone or whatever where Yoh smash your hands with fury while going with your demagogue tirade or something.
You meant the heretics are met by a militia, a gang, a pack of rabid dogs, that would have been the colorful expression
I'm not gonna pretend to care about women's boxing for a week every four years. I don't understand why others want to.
i'm very clearly talking about gansta - i used the term correctly
agreed, my second usage was just trying to be speedy to talk about those who act as douchebags with free reign due to gansta condoning it - not exactly phrased well but i don't even capitalize my sentences either as you may have noticed
We don't care about a single specific sport too much, we do care though about women sports in general and women rights even more generally.
And most of all this was something that struck a chord with normies, a great advance for the forces of good in the war against the existential threat of wokism.
People know this including uke and other true believers in the church of gender, they know this is going to hurt their chances
I don’t think so, but fine
they go where ever their bigotry takes them
i did
but again, you didn't address anything of substance that i wrote, instead just decided to attack the poster
i'm not upset, i'm actually a big fan of you, and i've found you incredibly reasonable as a mod - but surely you must understand that you had a chance to drive discussion and instead just went into ad hominem
again, more evidence why this is a religion and people act very differently in these threads because in their minds there's a right position and many wrong positions and thus it's fine to just attack all the "bad people"
don't deal with what i said, instead imply i'm stupid
so you think it's bigoted to point out that someone with xy chromosomes has an unfair advantage competing against people with xx?
one already won, the other is like -700 to win
