Are you parsing the difference between racial slurs, xenophobic slurs, and anti-immigrant slurs? I agree that those things are non-identical. I assume that you likewise would agree that they are all kissing cousins.

Do we think that the distinctions are important for the purpose of assessing whether it is hateful to spread apparently false rumors about Haitian immigrants eating cats?

Smartdfs, the allegation that Haitians, a predominantly black population, eat pets and that eating cats and dogs is part of their culture is rooted in the historical context of racial bias that populations of color are inherently and/or evolutionarily less “civilized” that white populations.

It is interesting that other posters have brought up the Chinese people eat bats analogy, as that is similarly a racial slur.

Anecdotally, I spent time in the Bahamas during the Haitian refugee crisis doing charity work. I’ve never in my life seen poverty of that sort, and likely never will again. They did not eat cats and dogs.

no idea. i'm sad a presidential candidate brought it up in a debate, possibly more saddened that the conversation has dominated political discourse this week. many cheered harris for "baiting" trump but in my view everyone's being baited by trump in this inane discussion. you grant more credence to crazies by saying "thou shalt not talk about this" than by just laughing at them. if the rumors are obviously untrue just post the relevant evidence and leave it at that.

How do you prove that people aren't eating cats other than by noting that public officials have said that there have been no credible reports? I could post pictures of Haitian immigrants eating chicken drumsticks and salad, but that obviously wouldn't prove the negative.

stating there have been zero credible reports and putting the onus on them to provide evidence of what they're saying? there seems to be a large proportion of the population that thinks by banning talking about the subject they win the debate and prove their position ipso facto, but it breeds distrust and uninformed polarized views imo

I know you’re just joking, but actually the Bahamian island where we stayed was full of millionaire lobster fishermen. Plenty of fat pets.

But the islands were segregated. There was a small footbridge between theirs and ours. The Haitians were not allowed on the white island after dark or before sunrise or they’d risk jail. We, however, were allowed on their island at any time.

A Haitian church once invited our group to visit their worship one evening. Their church was made of cardboard and the electricity was all wires and things I’d never seen before. They honored us at their service and fed us afterward. It was extremely meager, fruits and some dried fish items. I remember we ate it because to not do so would have been deeply offensive, and I’ve never forgotten the visceral shame… I’d never taken something from someone who had nothing before, and I probably never will again…

well i just heard that the cops there said they went back through 11 months of calls and couldn't find any about people eating pets or whatever, but when did you stop beating your wife?
