Former President Trump sounded an about-face Tuesday on the controversial tax policy known as the SALT deduction cap, breaking from a major provision in his signature piece of domestic policy.

first of all, SALT or various iterations of it date back to Lincoln, it was already in existence, what he did was put a 10k cap on that deduction which which brought in 94 billion dollars of additional tax revenue

this is not a way to "punish the blue states" but rather deeply in line with democrat party values of having the wealthy pay their share instead of finding various loopholes such as SALT in order to avoid paying less in taxes

lawsuits to repeal this act (coming from the wealthiest states) were all heard and lost - the cases were heard by the supreme court in 2022

under biden, some democrats in NY wanted to repeal it (because the people cutting them their checks kept saying "I want my deductions back" where they wanted to bring the deduction max from Trump's 10k to 80k - now idk about you, but last i checked, someone who is in a position to personally deduct 80k in taxes is an extremely wealthy person - so this flies directly in the face of democratic party values - because again, they aren't really about that it's just rhetoric - at the end of the day they're going to take a loophole used by billionaires to avoid paying their share and instead frame it as an evil thing committed by trump to punish the blue states

the blue states are not being "punished" the wealthy people are losing their bs tax deduction. I think we can all agree that they should be paying their fair share and they currently are not

this goes back as far as time, just look at caesar's civil war, he was an upstart who as a populist was doing crazy things like helping out the poor and enfranchising them and redistributing wealth and land so they got a share of it

the result of it was the senators declaring him an enemy of rome - they declared war on him because he was enriching the poor, it was not a coup d'etat by caesar but an act of self defense as they declared war on him - they were really dumb about it, he was on the closest frontier with armies, they were in the interior without only token defense forces (because armies were all at the frontier) - they knew his armies were dispersed all over for their winter quarters - hence why they did it in the middle of winter, they figured caesar was at his weakest then with no army ready to go at which point he'd probably come to rome and surrender or stay in gaul as a traitor - in which case he couldn't muster his army until the spring, by which point the senate could have mustered their own armies in greece and spain (which vastly outnumbered caesars) and then march to gaul and crush him

they never expected caesar would just go march on rome, it was such a shock that they assumed he had a much more powerful force than he did, in reality he only called a single legion which was the closest to his hq (and would get the rest much later as it'd take them plenty of time to gather supplies (as it's winter) and assemble

they assumed that caesar would never be so insane as to march on them without his full army of 10 legions so they assumed he had tricked them and was prepared for this but in reality he was only marching on them with a single legion

they had more than enough to repel him with but due to thinking his army was 10x larger they took that army and fled to greece, making matters even worse, they hastily raised a couple militas to station at well fortified cities along his path with the intention of slowing him down - but soldiers don't fight like they do in braveheart, they prioritize survival and run at the first sign of danger, this is doubly so for newly raised soldiers who have never seen combat and are told a massive army of hardened veterans used to killing massive gauls is marching upon them - so they did the reasonable thing and when caesar arrived, they sent out a delegation whch said "welcome to the town we were holding for you, now we're ready to join your cause" - so caesars army more than tripled on its way to rome

then once he got there, with the senate gone he was now basically in charge, which is what started the entire transition away from a republic and obviously he couldn't trust putting those wealthy people back in charge because they'd just try to kill him once more because of his populist policies

he had to put down an endless amount of rebellions, once he defeated one coalition of oligarchs a new coalition would rise up - there was over a decade of coalitions of people so wealthy they could raise private armies doing exactly just that to try to take down caesar and then his successor and restore the republic

caesar made the lives of the commoners of rome immeasurably better than under the republic
he also severely curtailed the power of wealthy citizens, sometimes outright killing them in proscriptions for the sole purpose of acquiring their wealth in order to pay for things the state needed
proscriptions would remain common in rome long after caesar, they also exist in most every dictatorship, a family acquires too much wealth and power and the state swoops in and confiscates it and perhaps even kills or imprisons them as well - this is super common even today in china where whenever there's a change in leadership at the top they engage in heavy purges of the old elites under their predecessor in order to strip them of that power and wealth and bestow it upon their own people - this is the primary reason for the flight of people and capital in china to the USA because they all know their time is limited and it's unlikely they can retain what they have under the new guy

but of course, billionaires would love that stuff and hate democracy because of "narratives"
