SIDES - Inaugural Game Thread

SIDES - Inaugural Game Thread

In this thread, we will play a new word game called Sides. It's somewhat similar to codenames, but cooperative and different.

Sign up with /in below if you want to play.

In this game, a target word will be randed as will a row of 7 cards that have letters on them (most 1 letter, some 2/3/4 letters).

2 people will be the guessers and everyone else will be able to give a clue.

The clue given must start with the letter on either the first or last card (the 'sides' of the row).

We discuss as a team who will give the clue with open discussion in the thread such as "I have a 7 letter word starting with a C"

Once there is some agreement on who gives the clue, that person will bold the clue they want to give in the thread.

The two guessers will then discuss in the thread and bold their guess. If it's correct, we move on to the next guessers and the next word. If wrong, then the clue givers post some info like "you are warm" or "you are about 30% there" etc to give directional info on how on track/off track their guess is.

Then they discuss and give another clue. But the person who bolded a clue cannot give another clue for the same word until everyone on the cluing side has clued a word (if we take that long to get the word), so one person can't hog the cluing.

Clues have to be one word, or an acronym, etc like in codenames; they can be hyphenated words

We can also give some info on how the clues relate to each other, or even say a clue is a 0 clue, so the opposite of what cluing for (e.g., clue 'colorful' as an opposite clue because the word is zebra)

I'll provide more details and examples in the thread in the morning, but this should be enough info for you to /in and join so we can play.

And perhaps pm it to me as well please, despite nich's recurring efforts to boot me out of the game :p

lol

or you can pick the word and pm the people in my post :p

Ok sending

R7 seems decent

Could go another way trying with stuff like P6 or G6 but seems unnecessary

r7

b5

i6

Two R7s that are good. One could lead astray more than the other. H8 cleans up any miss on that card imo.

Having two IH cards next to each other for too long is probably not great, so going with the right side seems prudent.

Or H5

Yea R7 seems like the way to go and H8 if it fails but could just instahit

Yeah, r7 is a winner.

To be fair they figured out it was dojo but not quite dojo and that it was Japanese

With some thought they coulda eliminated martial arts and sensei etc since not dojo and gotten to sumo some % of the time as Japanese fighting that isn’t martial arts

While dojo as a clue doesn’t mean Japan so could put them down wrong path of martial arts

Of course tubby dojo is also sumo but I didn’t know d1 had the goat clue up his sleeve&

"Sounds like dojo" isnt quite "knew is was dojo" lol

I think it sounds funny if you rhyme it w Ohio, like doh-hio

We shouldda guessed overweight ohian

Is the d5 similar to a d4 that everybody knows? If so, agree that seems really risky.

by Nicholasp27 P

Yeah similar to d4; but if you were clued that you would easily deduce what it is

by D1iabol1cal P

I think you're only saying that because you know what it is.

I think I'd rather go with the d4 to get in the realm. They can probably work out the d5 if they know it, and T5 after that should get them there if they don't.

by Nicholasp27 P

Nah, I guarantee I see the d5 and I equate it to the d4 but slightly different

May not get to the right word then but it gets me in the realm and with deduction on why not d4 we may get there or close

But whatever; if y’all wanna go d4 then that’s fine

by D1iabol1cal P

Well they will probably know now just from how we're talking about it lol. But words that are similar are not necessarily even related a lot of the time.

This string of posts does pretty much give away that the other word is dojo.

Nah we'd have spent hours and days talking about it before arriving in a broad region and then guessed kung fu anyway

Few bumps in there too

Not sure what you're trying to say, but I don't think anyone expected you to get sumo from that clue.

Oh, i was just making a joke with an addition that im glad we clued fast because we had no real full idea and couldda delayed the game a bunch

yeah I wasn't saying you shoulda gotten it; I liked that you went fast so we could move on because this was not gonna be a one word get unless you happened to be sumo fans

I was just saying that I think dohyo was a good clue, regardless of results, because

1. you could know the sumo term (maybe 10% do? maybe less in the US/UK) which was only chance at 1-shot
2. you would likely know it was related to dojo and japanese (high %), which would help with clue(s) 2 (3/4) more than dojo or other options
3. outside chance you think japanese dojo that's not martial arts = sumo (low %)

I was happy when ya'll just fired japan after recognizing it sounded like dojo because that was the best case scenario (besides the 10% you know sumo terms) and you didn't take 2 days to get there

mostly just wondering what this r7 is

by Nicholasp27 P

mostly just wondering what this r7 is

Me too. But I don't have an alternate suggestion.

the r7 is very likely to lead down the wrong path, but when combined with a second word the answer should become clear

or if they can figure out some of our alternate words, then r7 will get it in one
