how would it be medically documented? a projectile clips one's ear and cuts it. the projectile is not lodged in ones ear. how do the doctors know what it was? i doubt they did ballistic testing on his ear. doesn't seem to serve any medical purpose.

The ER may have had to dig plastic, glass, etc out of his ear or near it. The nature, shape, and location of the wound likely gave some clues.
