"Trust, but verify" (or its variation "trust, but audit") is a phrase often attributed to Reagan, who was a prominent republican, hence I thought it particularly apropos in context. I am sure the phrase and its variants have been used in many and varied contexts since (and probably before) he popularised it.
I think you are missing my point.
The consequences of a failed assassination, and the severity of the security failure, would be identical even if it were proven indisputably that Trump was hit by debris rather than the actual bullet.
My point, though not explicitly stated previously, is that it would not be a big deal except for the comments of Trump and his minions. He heard the bullet whizzing by, he felt it ripping through his skin, he knew instantly that he had been shot and was under attack, etc. Note though that he had the presence of mind to retrieve his high heels before retreating to safety in the face of being shot at.
I guess you can do that when God has your back and can turn your head at just the right moment to avoid certain death. True Divine Intervention would have jammed the shooter's gun. I guess God cared only about Trump and nothing about the poor soul who was killed or the two who were wounded.
My biggest issue is don't claim you were shot unless you actually were. Trump has that information; we do not. Just say you were injured in a shooting. His true admirers are too dumb to pick up on the difference and won't care anyway. And wear an appropriate sized bandage for what looked like you sneezed while shaving instead of wearing a loosely placed potholder on the side of your head.

Someone tried to assassinate him. In their attempt they killed one person and injured two others. Trump was also injured, whether by gunfire, shrapnel or fingernail. Who cares. It's a major deal either way. Stop trying to diminish how monumental a near miss assassination attempt was. Embarrassing.
