The costs of trans visibility
Yesterday, Dylan Mulvaney broke her silence: https://www.tiktok.com/@dylanmulvaney/vi....
For context, this is a trans influencer who built a 10 million strong following on TikTok. She took a brand deal with budweiser to post an ad on an instagram, and the anti-trans right went absolutely ballistic, calling for a boycott, condemning the company, and to some perhaps unknowable degree it influenced that Budweiser sales dropped by a 1/4 and
. Dylan speaks more personally about the effect of the hatred on her. What strikes me about this story is that it is just about visibility. This isn't inclusion in sports or gender-affirming care for minors, it was just that a trans person was visible. This wasn't even visibility in a TV commerical that a poor right-winger is forced to see, it was an ad on her own instagram page. We're all in our own social media algorithm influenced bubbles, but from my vantage point it really has seemed that in the last year or so things have just gotten worse for trans people and the backlash to even minor visibility is growing.
We need to do better.

Psychiatrists tend to be more thick skinned. It’s a requirement for their line of work.
Moreover, the frequency with which he is on line begs the question: when is he actually seeing patients? I’ve seen neckbeards who live in their mothers’ basements and drink Mountain Dew 24/7 spend less time online.
“Everyone” being a small handful of posters who’s world view is such that they don’t trust medical providers who hold his viewpoints
If you can’t even be honest with yourself do t try to lie to others
i'm easily in the top 1% of time suckage for people here and i am also probably in the top 1% of weekly hours worked as well (it's 7:20 and i'm working right now)
it's because i have so many natural 5-10 min breaks and need something to kill time for lineup announcements etc and i also need to force myself to take breaks from time to time to shut down and mentally refresh
could easily be posting as a way to relax in between patients, perhaps he's in academia/research side of it, perhaps he even manages a clinic instead of treating people directly or he crushed it so well selling his books after appearing on joe rogan and dr phil that he's now spending little time practicing and instead writing more books
whatever the reason may be, i have no reason to doubt him and while i disagree with him heavily on these issues, he's still clearly a very intelligent person
but i do agree that he is showing a surprising amount of intolerance for a profession which is mostly about showing empathy to terrible people
Fortunately there are enough legitimate medical providers who do not live in an alternate reality to provide care to people like me.
Yes, there is a grey area between professional sport (strictly categorised by sex), and anything under the age of 16 (should be inclusive for all, provided safety is not compromised). However, this is really only an issue for the tiny minority of individuals playing sport who are on the elite trajectory, probably much less that 1% of total participants.
I don't know the ins and outs of US college scholarships, but if a trans/XY athlete is taking the spot of a female athlete and gaining financially for doing so, then it should probably be categorised by sex.
As far as high school competition goes, I'm more agnostic. What are the stakes at this level? Are there examples of XY athletes taking the spots of XX athletes and benefitting financially or otherwise? (e.g., gaining university scholarships)
You're conveniently missing out this part.
when i played ice hockey, there were usually a token girl or two on a few random teams - often times girls who grew up in hockey families (my sisters included)
but once you hit the age of 12 when it turns into a contact sport, they either drop out or switch to an all girls league
girls hockey is a contact sport, i couldn't possibly imagine allowing a 14 year old trans female playing in an all girls league
the gap is just insane - i went to highschool with girls who won gold on the canadian national team after graduating - as good as they were, i, an absolute nobody who would never even be good enough to make a d3 college team was significantly better than them whenever they joined us for open ice shinny hockey without pads
i'm about inclusion - and we have that, most youth sports are already coed for sake of logistical simplicity - but there's nearly always a very good reason why they eventually split it up
Ya if I have to draw a line, I'd mostly put it in between the highschool and top level college sports that grant scholarships. I'm similarly agnostic on the exact location, if someone wants to say that a grade 12 state championship in individual sports or perhaps some high risk team sports also should exclude it, well ok, sure.
Except that it wouldn't, since the IOC has their own rules. Of course, that was already covered previously, with this post you unsurprisingly ignored:
You are very weirdly obsessed with these non-transgender boxers.
Nope.
In other news, Luciom's head might explode when he learns that the first ever transgender Paralympian will be participating this year, and she's...
In the Canada thread, Uke wrote
And this is false.
Thousands of minors got their breast removed, without any medical reason other than "the patient dislikes them because they don't feel appropriate to the patient identity".
Those are people that can't vote, but can apparently for Uke can consent on permanent mutilation based on their feelings.
https://www.city-journal.org/article/a-c...
Note that the above are procedures covered by insurance, on patients previously diagnosed with gender disphoria (and minors ofc at the time of surgery).
Thousands of permanently mutilated minors, "vanishingly rare" my ass.
Why should my head "explode"? ofc Petrillo shouldn't be allowed to compete with women lol, he was every national title as a man in the t12 before transitioning!
This is as clear cut a case as it can be, a biological man with records in his cathegory who transitions very late in life, even the most obsessed trans activists can't deny the physical advantage.
The saving element is that the paralympcs don't matter, so the "inclusivity" thing tends to apply. Yet not very inclusive for impaired biological women.
Dude, you’re even worse than he is.
It's amazing how some don't get this. Or else they just hand wave it away by saying "it's just one kid, let them play". uke_master pretends to agree so he seems reasonable, but then puts the cut-off at an absurdly high level.
You’d do a lot better at the whole psychoanalyzing bit if you dropped the idea that I “pretend to agree to be reasonable” and just, well, shockingly, say things I believe. Not that your false quote represents the post I made at all (which didn’t attempt a justification of any form at that time). I was just largely agreeing with Elrazor, a relatively rare thing.
I will agree that you believe you are being reasonable on this topic. "Pretend" was perhaps a bit of over-reaching hyperbole.
thank you for your magnanimity!
Wow.
Not sure what this is supposed to refer to, but it's a pretty weak deflection from your lie.
Why the wow? 3 other users just wrote that it's proper to treat competitions differently depending on the stakes. And it is wow when I write it?
Besides running isn't a contact sport either
I think there have been some issues in high-school sport (or sports to Americans), which feeds into university sports. Post-puberty there is a serious sex difference in performance, and regardless of scholarships gained or lost there is an issue of girls simply being discouraged if they stand no chance of winning. (As we all know, in Australia in 1998, even the mighty Williams sisters, having boasted they could beat any man outside the top 200, got beaten easily in successive one-set matches, 6-1, 6-2, by the men's world No.203, Karsten Braasch of Germany, who prepped by playing a round of golf, drinking a couple of shandies and smoking a few cigs. He said he held off his shots to make it more interesting.)
Nobody, or hardly anybody, minds trans inclusion in the right category. Trans boys and trans men pretty invariably compete in the girls' and women's categories, for obvious reasons, and no one objects as long as they are not doping on testosterone, which is probably not good for their health anyway. Similarly, if trans girls and trans women compete in the boys' and men's categories, no one's going to mind that either. Trans inclusion as such isn't an issue, it's a question of category.
I think "don't matter" in this context reads as "not important" or "not worthwhile". I hope that's not what you meant.
Exactly.
My question to you as I do agree with Shifty and would be stronger on the term. If a child under the age of 18 is already going through the process of medications to halt puberty why such a rush to remove a penis or breasts? If those parts of the body do not define you why not wait till your at the age of 18 to make that decision ? Personally any doctor that does these procedures on a child should have his license revoked in my opinion
What lie? I haven’t lied about anything.
