Netflix "Watch Instantly"

Netflix "Watch Instantly"

I just recently rejoined Netflix and was pleased to see they have added a "Watch Instantly" feature where you can stream a movie over the internet. The selection of movies/shows is subpar, but it's free baby! Well, free as in no extra charge. You can watch 1 hour for every dollar/month your subscription is and it doesn't affect your queued/shipped movies at all. Minuses are that you have to be running Windows and Internet Explorer, but the quality is great! I have a garbage laptop, but it looks the same as a DVD to me and it hasn't skipped/paused/hiccuped once so far.

I think episode 2 video quality looks a little better, maybe it's because I am trying to watch on my big tv, it looked better on my computer. Some scenes on my big tv are really clear and others don't look so good.

I might be able to continue watching it now. lol

all I heard was bad monkey and set in FL and I knew immediately it had to be a carl hiaasen adaptation and got very excited.

I've been so baffled how we didn't get an adaptation of one of his books long ago (he's kindv like elmore leonard on acid) and was really hoping they'd do a good job on this and while it's only 2eps so far I'm extremely optimistic.

vince vaughn channeling peak vince vaughn energy and love his co-star who is one of those

wait, there's a CARL HIAASEN TV show?? About ****ing time. Love his books. Vince3 Vaughn seems like a perfect actor to portray a ridiculous Hiaasen character. I will be watching this.

I just started S1E1, and the way it was presented was almost unwatchable. Peacock decided to fill the 16:9 screen with a show that was shot in 4:3. I changed the aspect on my TV to 4:3. Much better.

If your screen is completely filled, try changing the aspect to 4:3.

I will check this thread out, but I think it somehow gets a lot better video quality wise, after the first couple, I am on episode 4, I see episode 5 is 9.4 on IMDB so looking forward to that.

Also, the first 2 seasons are short and then full seasons starting on season 3, but you already know that I am guessing.

I was going to give Homicide: Life on the streets a try on Peacock today because I had not seen it and wasn't thrilled to try a 30-year-old show even though the good reviews.

But the main thing was it was supposed to be re-mastered in HD or even higher quality. I am not seeing it, barely HD if even that. I suppose it's better than 30-year-old video quality but not much better.

Is anyone else seeing better video quality?

While the series was outstanding through its entire run, Homicide was at its best (with its original cast) during its first three seasons. The series-long story arc for Detectives Pembleton and Bayliss is fascinating.

The series was based on David Simons' book, Homicide a Year on the Killing Streets. At the time, Simons was a police beat reporter at the Baltimore Sun who embedded into Baltimore's homicide unit for the entire year of 1988.

I had the good fortune of having read Simons' fact-crime classic prior to the arrival of the series. The book is exceptional and a must read for anyone intrigued by police procedurals.

It's cool seeing the early Detective John Munch, which is one of the longest running characters ever, 119 episodes of Homicide: Life on the Street and 242 episodes of Law & Order SVU, which I have probably seen the majority of.

Apparently, he played that character on 1 episode of The Wire in the series finale and 1 episode of Arrested Development also, I think I remember the Arrested one but can't recall The Wire one.

Apparently, he played that character on 1 episode of The Wire in the series finale and 1 episode of Arrested Development also, I think I remember the Arrested one but can't recall The Wire one.

IIRC, the scene was in one of the usual cop bars in the series. He was in the background, sitting at the bar chatting with the bartender.

I do recall the first few episodes of Homicide having a grainy look. I think they were doing that on purpose to try and match the gritty feel of the show. Ultimately the show is all about the writing and acting so it never affected my viewing enjoyment.

Speaking of Munch, I recall a scene where Ned Beatty's character keeps repeating "Detective Munch" out loud over and over. I don't even remember the context of it but it was more or less a way of expressing the love-hate relationship that the detective partners had for each other, almost like they were in a marriage. It's those kind of little moments that always made Homicide special.

Munch was based on Baltimore Homicide Detective Jay Landsman who went on to play Lieutenant Dennis Mello in the Wire.

And, of course, Detective Landsman was also the inspiration for the Jay Landsman character in the Wire.

From the Wire, as the character Mello, the real Landsman:

Seems like Belzer physically fit the part.

The book is just so, so good.

From the book and the series, the Homicide lexicon:

Throughout the book, Simon frequently refers to a set of 10 informal rules that apply in the majority of homicide cases, as detectives soon learn. They are as follows:

1) Everyone lies. Murderers lie because they have to; witnesses and other participants lie because they think they have to; everyone else lies for the sheer joy of it, and to uphold a general principle that under no circumstances do you provide accurate information to a cop.

2) The victim is killed once, but a crime scene can be murdered a thousand times.

3) The initial 10 or 12 hours after a murder are the most critical to the success of an investigation.

4) An innocent man left alone in an interrogation room will remain fully awake, rubbing his eyes, staring at the cubicle walls, and scratching himself in dark, forbidden places. A guilty man left alone in an interrogation room will go to sleep.

5) It's good to be good; it's better to be lucky.

6) When a suspect is immediately identified in an assault case, the victim is sure to live. When no suspect has been identified, the victim will surely die.

7) First, they're red. Then, they're green. Then, they're black. (Referring to the color of an open case on the board, the money that must be spent to investigate the case, and the color of the solved murder as it is listed on the board)

8) In any case where there is no apparent suspect, the crime lab will produce no valuable evidence. In those cases where a suspect has already confessed and been identified by at least two eyewitnesses, the lab will give you print hits, fiber evidence, blood typings, and a ballistic match.

9) To a jury, any doubt is reasonable; the better the case, the worse the jury; a good man is hard to find, but 12 of them, gathered together in one place, is a miracle.

10) There is to such a thing as a perfect murder. Always has been, and anyone who tries to prove otherwise merely proves himself naïve and romantic, a fool who is ignorant of Rules 1 through 9.

Aside: I was watching Justified, City Primeval just yesterday when Marshall Givens dropped Rule #2 on his partner.

i think we just didn't notice the grain because everything looked like that back then

but whenever i watch something that was televized from sports to tv clips it's always noticeably grainy

ya first time that I can think of since swingers where I thought vince was born to play this role.

as for the murder police rules, those are fantastic and I've seen em before obv as a massive fan of david simon, and boy does #5 hold true for everything esp poker.

Heels season 2(Starz) and How to with John Wilson season 3(Max) on Friday.

Dark Winds season 2(AMC) on Sunday

Just finished Dark Winds season 1. Fantastic.

Terminator Zero animated on Netflix is good after the first 2.

I finished it. Episode 7 was really good. Looking forward to more seasons.

I meant to post this before, but in case anyone forgot that today is Judgement Day. Also, Timothy Olyphant is the voice of terminator but there aren't very many speaking scenes.

I finished Dark Winds. They should call it a day after season 2 but apparently they aren't going to.

End of season 2 felt like the end of Longmire where it's just kinda ridiculous that these law enforcement outfits in the middle of nowhere have the most dangerous jobs on earth.

I thought the Longmire resolution was

Spoiler
Show

Walt and Starbuck finally got together?

Seriously, I don't recall the ending being particularly bad or good. Doesn't stand out in my memory, at least.

^^^Yes, that was part of the ending. I just remember being relieved when Longmire ended because there was no way I could watch another episode.

Interesting that the Mathias actor from Longmire is the lead on Dark Winds. Jacob Nighthorse actor from Longmire also has a good role in Dark Winds S2.
