Politics and Society Moderation Discussion Only Fans Thread

Hello everyone. I've closed the previous mod thread, and opened this to capture all issues related to moderation policies and actions going forward. I'll kick it off by reposting my intro post from the other thread. Again, I'm happy to be here and look forward to hearing from you.

Hello everyone.

I'm very pleased to have the opportunity to serve as a moderator in Politics and Society. I asked for this position because I believe we are experiencing a polarization in our politics and society unseen since the 1960s. We may well be at a juncture from which we will either make great progress or suffer great setbacks in regards to our democratic foundations and civil rights over the next few years. So I believe it is important to maintain a forum for discussing these important topics. When the other mods had to step back a bit due to their real life time obligations, I asked to join the mod team to help keep the forum going.

I have not followed this forum in the past, though I have been reading through threads the last few days and made a few posts. This has allowed me to get a sense of the initial impression the forum likely makes on new readers who are deciding if our forum is a place they would like to visit regularly and participate in. While I see some familiar names from the live poker forum, many of you I have not had any interaction with to date. I have no preconceived notions of anyone's posting behavior and will essentially start from a clean slate.

I will shortly post more about my modding approach and give my initial impressions of the forum based on my observations over the last several days. I will be soliciting your input on things you like about the forum that you want to remain, and things you don't like that you would like me to change. Your candid input and feedback is very important to me. Especially, please don't hesitate to let me know if you think a policy or a proposal is a bad idea. I'd rather hear it before it goes into effect than after.

My overall modding principle is simple: Be Nice. Disagreement need not be disrespectful, and everyone must be treated with respect. Calling a poster derogatory names or hurling snarky insults never usefully advances a discussion. It just bogs things down and turns off many would be participants. And it's not nice. Don't do it.

My goal is to have a forum where people with a wide variety of opinions along the political spectrum enjoy expressing and debating their views in a spirited manner, free from insults, bigotry and denigrating comments. If you enjoy discussing these important and often polarizing issues in a passionate, yet respectful manner, I look forward to getting to know you and working with you to create a forum people will enjoy visiting and contributing to. You can be as committed, determined and relentless as you like in advocating for your position. Be persuasive, thought provoking and challenging. But be nice.

I want to thank tame_deuces and King Spew for their support in bringing me onboard and for all the time and effort they have put into making the forum better. While I am taking over most of the day to day modding responsibilities, both are retaining their mod status and superpowers, and will be supporting the forum as their availability permits. And I personally welcome their continued advice and feedback.

Again, I am happy to be here and look forward to getting to know you.

I have always thought it was silly to replace some of the letters of a word with asterisks, but leave enough of the letters to make it clear what the word originally was.

I agree. I also think irl using words like "fracking" or similar substitutes is silly since everyones brain instantly substitutes the obscenity. But I don't write the music, I just play in the band. So as long as that is the policy I'll be enforcing.

Circumventing the profanity filter has been a reason to moderate one's post as long as I have been using forums for 15 years now. Absolutely no reason that should change.

I think the profanity filter is dumb, condescending, and should go, but I guess that's a different conversation. I don't feel strongly enough about the issue to push for it in ATF.

I strongly suspect that it was originally born out of some puritanical hang-up of Mason's. I've noticed he never swears, at least not in his posts.

It's even worse that you can't discuss **** sapiens.

I think the current discussion in the general/LC thread is thread-worthy in its own right. If mods agree, perhaps a bored mod could excise it into a thread called "Crime and punishment in the US" or something.

Sir, we have strict rules against these kinds of personal attacks.

Yes we do and I deleted the posts.

Please refrain from making posts critiquing or generally criticizing other posters. If you believe a particular post violates our rules and requires a mods attention then report it. But please no "this poster sucks " type posts.

Thanks.

It is a good idea. Thanks d2. And I didnt limit it to the US. The new thread is Crime and Punishment. It is up now but I am in the process of moving the posts. Its time consuming since there are hundreds of posts to ne individually sorted and selected so it will take some time to complete.

OK. The Crime and Punishment thread is up that was created by extracting posts from the general discussion page. So if you are looking to continue that conversation please go there. Since I had to sort through about 500 posts and manually select those to move, its possible some posts were moved in error. Also, I left behind some posts that were insult derails, while I moved other, general banter type derails intact.

Nice, cheers.

What does a pink username mean? I don't remember ever seeing it before today.

I'm not sure. I think it may be a throwback to an older color scheme. But whatever it is I'm sure it outranks me by a mile.

Same thing as purple, or yellow - nothing, in terms of different roles or privileges. It's something they've been given/awarded at some point due to contributions, winning a contest, something of that nature.

The only colours that signify a different role on 2+2 are green, orange, blue, and red.

but you understand how that can be confusing

for example, you are a mod, but you do not have mod colors - you have the same color that someone who is not a mod could have won via a contest of sorts - you see how that can get confusing and why a lot of faux mods are often given deference they don't deserve because their name has a color

for example, i've had an extended back and forth with a few mods recently and one was such a petty bish that he gave out infraction points - ok for him and others to toss insults at me but if i insult them they get to chalk it against me - just sad and pathetic in general - i like you two bobo and browser, but a lot of your compatriots are sad and pathetic individuals who i suspect only mod because that's basically all they got going in life

i'm sure there's a bunch of people with colors who are not mods who are given artificial deference when they insult others because people don't want to catch a ban by speaking back to them - frankly, i'm quite surprised i haven't been given a temp ban yet this week for my actions - not that i think i deserve one nor did anything wrong but that those are the kind of petty and pathetic people i'm dealing with who will make a lengthy post insulting me and then give me infraction points when i respond

furthermore, the difference between red and green, if we're supposed to know it, is moot on the colorblind

Thanks for the info. What a bad system though, IMO.

Yeah, it's not ideal, but it's never been seen as a big enough problem to get into.

Honestly think Bobo should be red now as he has basically replaced Mat

Oh that’s what the blue means what about the green ? I take it Red is the highest level of left wing moderator *⚖️

You should ask to be made orange, just like your hero.

I believe Bobo should have an orange branding. (possibly red).

I want to be made purple like my hero, David Carradine.
